How to Turn dry hair into healthy hair in 5 steps

January 10, 2017

Happy 2017 everyone! I couldn’t think of a better way to start it off than with a haircare post. I’m not sure about you, but cold weather completely dries out my hair. My soft summer locks turn into dull lifeless strands, I swear it happens over night. I thought I would compile the steps and products I use to battle my dry hair and transform it back into healthy, shiny, soft hair in 5 steps.

Step 1: Shampoo less often. Not only is washing your hair everyday time consuming, but will strip your hair of its natural oils. Dry hair is brittle which equals breakage and frizz. Your hair will get a little oily in-between washes, but nothing a couple spritzes of Batiste dry shampoo can’t fix, or you can always through on a beanie! 🙂

Step 2: ALWAYS condition. Gently towel dry your hair after shampooing. Absorbing excess water will allow the hair to absorb more conditioner. Don’t forget to leave it on for at least 3 minutes. Pick one day a week to do a hair mask (I choose garbage day, that way I never forget haha). My favourite is coconut oil, it’s inexpensive & gives great results. I have also been loving the Agave Restorative Hydrating Mask, my hair feels so nourished after I use it. Another favourite is the, Whole Blends Repairing Mask by Garnier, it’s a nice thick consistency, and leaves my hair so soft and smelling AMAZING for days.

Step 3: Be gentle when your hair is wet. Instead of vigorously rubbing your towel over your hair, try blotting your hair and gently squeezing out any extra moisture. If you need to brush your hair while it’s wet, don’t forget to prep it with a leave in conditioner. Garnier’s 5-in-1 spray instantly became a favourite of mine. I generously apply it to my hair, and my comb to slides right through, it’s amazing!

Step 4: Use protective treatments. Apply a dime size amount of serum, or oil to damp hair before styling. You will notice the oil really helps give it a smooth, shiny, healthier appearance. I am currently loving the oil treatment from Agave, especially the pump top. This oil has helped keep my hair feeling soft and looking hydrated without weighing it down.

Step 5: Skip or minimize heat styling. I get it, not all of us are left with beautiful mermaid hair when we let it air dry. If you are styling your hair with hot tools, opt for less damaging ones. Put down your beloved straightener and try a curling wand to create loose waves, or hot rollers for that blow out affect. Experiment with the temperature on your hot tools, you’d be surprised how little heat you actually need. If you’re really committed to healthy hair this year, here is a link to my most loved heatless curls, and hairstyles.

Hopefully these tips will help you on your path the healthy hair. I’d love to hear from you what products or tips you use to combat dry hair. 🙂
